Panthers "Will Not Pursue" Texans QB Watson Amid Earlier Reports

The NFL Network reported that the Panthers “will not pursue” Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson with the NFL trade deadline a week away after reports there was renewed interest.

The Panthers reportedly explored the option of trading for Watson during the offseason before the lawsuits but ended up acquiring quarterback Sam Darnold from the Jets. When reports came out Monday of the Panthers’ interest, coach Matt Rhule said "You guys know that wasn't from me. I have nothing to add to that. My focus is on this team."

Rhule also has said that Darnold will remain the starting quarterback after being benched in Sunday’s loss against the Giants. Darnold had thrown for just 111 yards with an interception at the time before the benching.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said yesterday at the fall owners meetings that there “wasn't enough information” about the allegations against Watson to put him on the commissioner's exempt list. Per that quote, we can surmise Watson currently is eligible to play if traded.
