Mahomes, Chiefs inks richest deal in sports history

Patrick Mahomes has just become the richest 24-year old in sports history.

In just his very short pro career, Mahomes has captured a MVP award, a championship along with the SB MVP award, and now the richest contract in NFL history.

Late Monday afternoon, the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes agreed to a 10-year extension worth up to $477 million, per Adam Schefter reports.

Overtime the QB can capture up to $25 million in incentives for winning the AFC championship game or receiving MVP honors making the grand total up to $503 million. Mahomes half a billion-dollar contract surpasses baseball’s Mike Trout for the richest contract in the history of the United States.

Though many will find ways to argue this, Mahomes is worth that much to the Chiefs’ franchise. He brought them their first championship in 50 years this past season after years of being stalled in NFL mediocrity. You have seen what the team did with the same core offensive talent with Alex Smith all the years he served in Kansas City compared to what the team is now, a high powered offense that scares NFL defenses in so many different ways. And Mahomes is young as is the talent on the team, all key pieces collectively in their primes and for the most part under contract. This team will be arguably favorites to win the next two Super Bowls.

But with all good comes bad and that is the negative aspect of this deal. How will this affect the team being able to bring in new pieces that will help them compete against teams like the Ravens, Patriots, and other up and incoming contending teams? Also what if Mahomes gets injured? When you have such an all-time great player, their talents can cover up some deficiencies your team has, i.e. the Chiefs’ suspect defense. These are all questions that will be wondered over these next ten years but what is for certain, the Chiefs have to strike now while they still have lightning in a bottle.

Now we wait to see what will happen with Deshaun Watson and Dak Prescott, but one thing for sure, they aren't getting Mahomes type money.
