NFL Week 5: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Welcome back to another segment of The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly.

With NFL games from Week 5 finally being done after some reshuffling, we are getting to that point in the season where we can kind of tell which teams are legit and who is not. Something I didn’t expect to see from this week was Tom Brady looking like a rookie on a potential game-winning drive and forgetting what down it was. I certainly didn’t expect to see the Cleveland Browns continue to streak and possibly become a real contender this year. One thing that was clear however was the Jets getting rid of RB Le’Veon Bell after sneak dissing them on social media. Here is what we learned from NFL Week 5:

Welcome ladies and gents, every week after the final game in the NFL week we will analyze, condemn, and celebrate all the crazy plays and mishaps that have happened so far in the league. Whether it’s a game-winning field goal or the interception that costs the game in the closing moments, we are on it. Let me introduce you to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. What team gets the feature?

The Good: Russell Wilson and the Seahawks remain perfect

For the first time in franchise history, the Seattle Seahawks are off to a 5-0 start after beating the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football. Russell Wilson has been amazing in these games throwing for over 1,500 yards with 19 touchdowns ( a league-high) and only two interceptions. This year he has offensive weapons and more impact players on the defensive side and as currently stands, the road to the Super Bowl is going through Seattle unless of course the NFL pony up and get a bubble for the playoffs.

Wilson had his 34th career game-winning drive Sunday night in what was a physical matchup against the Vikings. This has become the norm for him—if you give him time late in the game he’s going to pick you apart. It’s important knowing that even though this team can give up some points, you can depend on Wilson to get you back in the game and win it. The team is slated to get safety Jamal Adams back before their game against the rival Cardinals so that should strengthen this defense that can struggle at times. Also, they have some more players getting healthy during this bye week for them so that should spell good for them moving forward.

The Bad: 49ers going through Super Bowl hangover

The San Franciso 49ers were the favorites to win the NFC again and make it to the Super Bowl, but that was before the season started. Since then, this team has dropped significantly in terms of their play and execution. Their top-five offense that they had all of last year has dropped to the bottom half of the league. The defense remains top-five but when you look at their schedule it’s not saying much given the level of competition they are facing. Their only two wins on the season came against the sorry teams in the Big Apple. Not to mention, they are coming off a week where they had to bench their starting QB Jimmy G because of his struggles against the Dolphins.

Things don’t look like it’ll get better for this team either. CB Richard Sherman is having some injury problems after having a setback on his calf that will leave him out for their next game. Nick Bosa is already out for the season with his ACL injury and they just gave away DT DeForest Buckner to the Colts in the offseason. That’s just the problems they have on defense. Their offensive line is still looking abysmal in back to back weeks, giving no kind of protection for their QB.

Looking ahead at their schedule, they have some tough games coming up against the L.A. Rams, New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, and the Green Bay Packers. Right now, the Niners are last in their division and I don’t see that changing anytime soon especially with that gauntlet they’ll have to face. Maybe a trade for Matty Ice can save their season and give a spark to this struggling offense because things are looking bad for this once deadly team.

The Ugly: Dak Prescott Injury

No one wants to see injuries in the NFL especially to a well-respected guy like Dak Prescott who has been through so much already in 2020. Sunday he had a gruesome ankle injury that has cost him the season and possibly the Dallas Cowboys as well. The bad thing about this injury is that it happened during this contract battle between Dak and ownership. Though he is on the franchise tag for $30 plus million this year his future is now up in the air.

After this season Dak will become a free agent, but Jerry Jones swears that he is still in their plans for the future and is adamant about getting a deal done. He probably won’t get the elite QB money he was initially looking for with this injury, however. If the Red Rifle can lead the Cowboys to a playoff berth and dare I say a win in the playoffs, Jerry might change course and decide a QB coming back from that injury might not be the best bet for the team which would be a dumb decision, in my opinion, giving how great of a QB Dak is. For as much flak as the team gets, Dak’s development has been one of the bright spots for the Cowboys. It’s just an awful situation to see Dak in who has made an impact in this league.

Here’s to him making a speedy recovery.
