Blake Griffin is here for a good time, not a long time

It is official, Blake Griffin is a Brooklyn Net.

The Brooklyn Nets broke the news yesterday by adding six-time All-Star Blake Griffin after he and the Nets agree to a vet-minimum contract for the rest of the season. This was after he was brought out by his former team, Detroit Pistons, and hit waiver wires over the weekend.

Of course, this was breaking news, adding a guy of Griffin’s caliber to an already loaded team that’s on a championship chase. Griffin is reunited with his Lob City teammate DeAndre Jordan and sources tell us that Kyrie Irving had a hand in Griffin’s arrival with their close relationship.

But what does this mean for the Nets and Griffin? Last we saw he looked as if was on his last legs for the Pistons, the team that was overtaken by Jerami Grant and his breakout season. In 20 games for the Potions this season, Griffin is averaging career lows all over the board.

You may say that’s because he is on the sorry Pistons thats’ obviously rebuilding but when you look at all the hustle stats, the rebounding, deflections, blocks, and steals, all that is down big from where we saw the last of ‘great’ Blake Griffin.

So what type of player are the Nets getting? He’s no star anymore and anyone thinking he is a 20-points per game caliber player still haven’t been watching him these past two seasons in Detriot. He’s injury-riddled throughout his career, and he’s still recovering from his season-ending injury last season now. Also, he’s not that effective of a player anymore, shooting under .500 from the field and close to .300 from three. But luckily for him, that’s not a role he needs to have on this team. He’s just here for a good time, not a long time and he can be very impactful in many ways.

Griffin doesn’t need to be a high minutes number but he can certainly either play a limited starting role or become a strong player off the bench. He can play an effective role at cutting to the basket for lobs with the spacing the combination of Irving, Harden, and Durant will make. Hopefully, the Nets get a revitalized Griffin who will show you the tenacity he used to have back with the Clippers. His being able to shoot effectively and possibly handle the ball in certain situations as he’s previously done will be a boost for the Nets. He has to succeed at doing the little things because the offensive load will be carried by the three superstars there already. So anything he adds will just be more to the riches they already have.

This move didn’t sway my title outlook. I still believe that the Nets are the team to beat pending AD’s health and whatever moves LeBron makes by the trade deadline. It will be interesting to see how the Nets use Griffin, however. They’ll probably make him look good and if they win a championship he will have suitors coming for him that will let him recoup some money with another contract. Most likely Griffin doesn’t be on this team next year but if they win the championship like I predict it would be for sure a good ride for him.
